Timber - The most sustainable of building materials

page_image_15-s There are many reasons for specifying timber products for your project. Whether it is the compelling environmental arguments, the long-term value afforded by an easily-maintained material, the superior look and feel of real timber, the thermal performance of today’s tough building and local planning regulations, Allan Brothers windows and doors meet your requirements.

fscTimber is the only naturally renewable material for windows. The softwood timber in our windows is FSC certified so you can be sure that the timber harvested has been replaced by even more new trees, which then grow by absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere.

Every cubic metre of wood requires one tonne of Carbon Dioxide to grow.

carbon-footprint-logoOnce a tree has matured to full height, its rate of CO2 absorption will slow and the tree can be harvested to allow replanting with new, vigorously-growing saplings which begin the absorption of CO2 all over again.

Even after felling, processing the trees into timber, shipping to the factory and converting into finished products, our softwood windows and doors are ‘carbon negative’.

This means our timber windows contain less embodied energy than those made from any other material and therefore contribute the lowest level of carbon emissions to the atmosphere. What’s more, because of modern double or triple glazing and good energy efficiency, you can be confident that our windows will continue to save energy and reduce carbon emissions throughout their long life.

sustainability2Unlike other types of window, timber windows can also be repaired easily and inexpensively, extending their life still further, meaning even less impact on the environment than replacements. At the end of their life they can be recycled or used as a biomass fuel and if they do end up in landfill, they are fully bio-degradable.

Very few materials compare to timber in terms of character, style and versatility. As a natural product, it brings warmth, good looks and added value to any property. Couple this with high quality glazing and factory applied modern finishing techniques, and your timber windows will provide you with long lasting high performance for years to come.
